OptimumCache FAQ

DEPRECATED. Please read https://www.cloudlinux.com/cloudlinux-os-blog/entry/optimumcache-a-feature-of-cloudlinux-os-has-been-discontinued

Q. How much does OptimumCache costs?
OptimumCache is provided for free with CloudLinux

Q. What does OptimumCache do?
OptimumCache works as file cache deduplicator. It detects duplicate files on the disk, and makes sure that only one copy of those files are loaded in the cache. All requests from duplicates will be loaded from that cache. This drastically improves file cache performance, decreasing load on disks

Q. What are OptimumCache requirements?
OptimumCache requires CloudLinux 6 or CloudLinux 7, 64bit and EXT4 filesystem. CloudLinux 5.x and 32bit versions will not be supported

Q. Is OptimumCache compatible with flashcache and bcache?
Yes, you can use OptimumCache at the same time as you use flashcache / bcache

Q. Is OptimumCache compatible with PHP opcode cache like APC, xcache and eAccelerator?
Yes, you can use PHP opcode cache in combination with OptimumCache

Q. Can OptimumCache improve performance?
If you have significant IOWait, you can see major performance improvements when you use OptimumCache. OptimumCache decreases the IOWait, and that results in overall performance increases. We have seen average page speed improvements of 20% after OptimumCache had been deployed.

Q. Can OptimumCache improve density?
Yes. In shared hosting, disk subsystem is one of the common bottlenecks on the server. OptimumCache is able to significantly decrease the load on the disks, removing the bottleneck, and providing you with ability to host more customers on the same hardware.

Q. Can OptimumCache decrease server load?
Yes. OptimumCache was found to significantly decrease the IOWait & system CPU usage – greatly decreasing overall system load.

Q. How to install OptimumCache?
You can find installation instructions here: http://docs.cloudlinux.com/index.html?installation_of_optimumcache.html

Q. How to remove OptimumCache?
You can find uninstall information here: http://docs.cloudlinux.com/index.html?uninstall_optimumcache.html

Q. Is OptimumCache compatible with ext3 filesystem
No, OptimumCache requires EXT4 filesystem. You can switch ext3 filesystem to ext4 filesystem, but due to metadata layout, you will experience some performance penalties.

Q. Is OptimumCache compatible with NFS, XFS, BTRFS
No, OptimumCache requires EXT4 filesystem

Q. How much disk space should I reserve for OptimumCache?
OptimumCache stores copies of commonly used duplicates on disk. After that, those files will be retrieved from that OptimumCache disk only. It is recommended to make that cache anywhere from 0.75 to 2x the amount of RAM on the server. You can find more info on resizing OptimumCache here: http://docs.cloudlinux.com/index.html?installation_of_optimumcache.html

Q. Should I store OptimumCache on SSD?
You will get additional performance boost by placing OptimumCache files on SSD drive, as it will speed up retrieval of those files.

Q. What is ploop OptimumCache comes with?

Ploop is high efficiency loopback disk image file. The main advantage of ploop is that you can set it’s size which won’t be exceeded.
